Just how important is it to learn another language?
For the European Parliament the answer is very. The EP has always maintained a focus on promoting language learning and cultural diversity. In fact, one of its objectives is that all EU citizens should aim to master two languages in addition to their native tongue.
This objective goes further than simply improving international communications, according to the European Parliament, it is a necessary step to ensure all citizens achieve their educational and employment potential. But more than that, language learning has actually been identified as one of the central skills necessary for educational improvement.
To help achieve this, in December 2001, an EP resolution was passed to promote language learning and linguistic diversity. The three main focus areas were lifelong language learning, improving the teaching of foreign languages, and creating a language-friendly environment.
As a result, 2001 was declared the European Year of Languages by the Council of Europe, the European Union, and UNESCO. Since then, the 26th September has been declared the European Day of Languages, a day intended to raise awareness of the many languages spoken in Europe and to encourage everyone to learn new ones.
Since then what has the European Union done to promote foreign language learning?
The Erasmus+ Programme initiated in January 2014, it involves not only the promotion of linguistic and cultural diversity but also the promotion of education, training, youth and sport.
The Creative Europe Programme aims to assist international communications by providing financial assistance for language projects in cultural, creative and audiovisual sectors.
The European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML), supported by the EP, promotes language study through teaching and research so as Europeans can learn more efficiently.
